Welcome to our Annual Adult Summer Reading Program

The Adult Services Department is excited to announce the theme for our 6th Annual Adult Summer Reading: Novel Destinations.

Registration begins on Monday June 20 and is open to Roxbury Library Cardholders. The first 100 people to register will receive a globe key chain. All participants are encouraged to enter the weekly drawings for interesting prizes. Weekly drawings will start on June 27.

Also this year, we will be holding an online trivia contest. Each week, a question will be posted on the library's website, blog, twitter and facebook page. Everyone who answers the question correctly will be entered in a drawing for a special prize.

Don't forget our Kickoff Concert featuring Phyllis Chapell on Friday June 24 at 7:00PM!

Save NJ Library Funding!

On February 9, 2009 Bill A3753 was introduced into the New Jersey Legislature. This bill would cut in half the required funding for public libraries in the state of New Jersey. You can read the bill text here.

Please contact your Assemblymen Michael Patrick Carroll and Richard A. Merkt and tell them you oppose this legislation.

Below is a sample letter. Feel free to use this text or create your own.

I oppose the Bill A3753 introduced by Assemblyman Vincent Prieto (from District 32, Bergen & Hudson) and I call on you to please do the same. This bill calls for an adjustment in New Jersey law that lowers the minimum funding level for municipal public libraries from 1/3 mill in equalized valuation to 1/6 mill. This modification would have a disastrous consequence on all libraries in the state by effectively cutting their funding in half. This would lead to significant cut backs in library services in those communities at a time when library usage is growing and is needed more than ever.

The financial difficulty facing numerous residents necessitates access to important information resources available in New Jersey's free public libraries, such as access to computers for educational or business needs, or to find jobs and other opportunities; and increases the use of the other services of the public library, such as loaning books and other media or attending programs for children and the entire family.

The need for free access to information, the internet, and educational material is most dire. The public libraries are vital community centers providing indispensable services to the residents, even more so during these difficult economic times. In addition, it is our tradition, that is, of a democratic society, for the citizens (of New Jersey and the country) to have access to free and open information. And this is indeed the purpose and function of the public library.

Therefore, I implore the state Senator and the Assembly members of New Jersey to formally oppose and protest Bill A3753. I ask that you not sign on as a co-sponsor.

February is Pet Month at the Roxbury Library!

Join the Roxbury Public Library for a month of activities all about our furry, four-legged friends!

On Tuesday, February 3 at 2pm we will host Preschool Storytime with Charlie. Charlie and his owner Miss Peg, from Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter, will be here to tell us a story. Miss Peg will also show the children how to properly greet a dog, give a dog a treat, and teach general pet safety.

Also on Tuesday, February 3 at 7PM a representative of the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter will tell you What It Means to Have a Dog. A great program for the whole family, it covers everything from where to get a dog, how much they cost, what they eat and what to do with the new member of your family. Then on Saturday, February 7 from 10AM-12PM, the library will host a Pet Adoption Event in conjunction with Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter. A number of adoptable dogs and cats will be at the library looking for a new home. Come in and find your new best friend!

Homework: A Parents Survival Guide

This practical workshop will offer parents the advice they need to tackle common homework problems. The Roxbury Public Library kicks off its Third Annual Adult Summer Reading Program. Our theme this year is Think Global, Read Local and we're offering a bevy of international-themed programs to entertain and inform you this summer.

Our first program will be this Friday at 7PM when Jodee James will perform Celtic music at the library. Next Tuesday at 7PM, James P. Kane will give you a whirlwind tour of the world with his slideshow/lecture Around the World in 60 Minutes.

After that, we start our Foreign Film Festival. Every Tuesday night at 6PM from June 17th to August 5th, we will be showing contemporary foreign films. A complete list of titles can be found to the right.

There will also be weekly prizes and a photo contest. Watch this space for further details.

In addition to the performance, we also gave out some prizes on Friday night. Summer Reading Prizes went to Amber Thiselton-Dyer, Kate Morgan, Barabara Dzeidra, Michael Harms and Beth Kolanko.

The autographed copy of Double Tap by Steve Martini went to Jennifer Mercadante and the personalized READ poster went to Julius Luck. Look for it in the library this fall.

End of Summer Bash

Murder, Mayhem and Martinis went out with a bang! Our performance of My Fatal Valentine was a great success. Concert Friday, July 20 at 7PM

The Roxbury Public Library continues its Friday Night Concert Series with a performance by Phyllis Chapell. Phyllis Chapell plays and sings great songs from all over the world. Her repertoire features songs in 10 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Israel, and the U.S. Her 3-octave vocals are supported and complemented by her acoustic guitar play, capturing the essence of musical styles from percussive Brazilian sambas and explosive flamenco rumbas to elegant classical arias, folk, jazz and original ballads. Refreshments will be served. Doors open at 6:30 and the music begins at 7:00. Admission is free with a Roxbury library card. $3.00 for others.

Raised on a diet of greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Miles Davis, Aubrey brings a fresh, modern interpretation to classic jazz.

Thanks to everyone who came to the concert on Friday night. The music was wonderful and we hope you had a good time. A very special thanks to Geri Silk and the Friends of the Roxbury Public Library for their donations which made this program possible.

Grover Kemple & Bob Marks Concert May 18

The Roxbury Public Library will be kicking off our 2007 Adult Summer Reading Program on Friday May 18, 2007 with an Evening Concert featuring Grover Kemble and Bob Marks.

The concert, free with a Roxbury Library Card ($3 without), will be first come first seated. Doors Open at 6PM and the concert will begin at 6:30PM

Registration begins at 6pm on May 18. If you are one of the first 100 Roxbury Library Card Holders to sign up you will receive a very cool "get a clue" flashlight-- batteries included!

The Adult Summer Reading Program will be the same as last year: just read a book (or listen to one) and enter to win one of our fun weekly prizes. The first weekly drawing for prizes will be on Monday June 11.

We are also planning a Murder Mystery evening for the End of the Summer Party on August 24, 2007
